THE TRAVELER COWL | A Studio Project

With the release of Heirloom’s new Merino Magic Medley 8 Ply it was the perfect opportunity to whip up Andrea Mowry’s new classic, The Traveler Cowl.

Designed with colour play in mind, this cowl project was the perfect canvas to experiment with Medley’s palette of colour that features long tonal variations within the ball.

The satisfaction of watching each colour gently melt into the next ensured a quick and engaging project. Join me as I explore the finer details and offer some project notes.

Enjoy!

STUDIO PROJECT | The Traveler Cowl

DESIGN

The Traveler Cowl was published by knitwear designer Andrea Mowrey, January 2024. It’s available as a digital download HERE.

The design is written for four sizes, from toddler to adult. We love that the pattern includes notes on experimenting with different yarn weights and gauges.

SKILLS

  • Knit and purl stitches

  • Working flat

  • Increasing and decreasing

  • Repeating patterns

  • Seaming

TOOLS

*The pattern notes suggest a 4mm needle. I found a 4.5mm produced a desirably squishy and soft handling fabric. My resulting gauge was 16 stitches in 10 cm in stocking stitch.

MATERIALS

Merino Magic Medley 8 Ply features a palette of colour changing yarns with long tonal variation within the ball. Opting for a moody colour effect I went with the colour Midnight Wisteria 7085.

I followed the instructions for size 3 and used 4 balls of Medley.

The Project

FINAL THOUGHTS

My size selection and gauge produced a finished neck circumference of 71cm and a front depth of 60cm. I was aiming for a large adult size. The resulting proportions produced a generous and deliciously snuggly cowl.

It’s definitely a pattern I would knit again, perhaps using a hand-spun yarn for the thrill!

Merino Magic Medley 8 Ply (that’s a moutful!) has a great hand-feel and I think will be next-to-skin soft for most wearers. I can confidently recommend this yarn for lots more accessories and I’m just itching to try it in a colourwork project!
