MILLSTONE COLLAR | A Free Knitting Pattern

MILLSTONE

The once essential community millstone has with time become symbolic of the labour and effort we put into our work. From the physical strength required to grind our grain into flour or our dogged determination to turn raw fleece into a hand worked garment, this symbol of effort and transformation is still relevent today. It reflects our commitment and the time given to each project we undertake. The Millstone collar, with its deep garter furrows reminiscent of the millstones cutting face, is with a touch of irony a quick and easy project that you might just finish in a single afternoon. Knit flat from end-to-end in the ultra-soft Yana XL from Amano Yarns, the Millstone collar is a striking accessory and the ultimate layer for a Melbourne winter.

DESIGN NOTES

The Millstone collar is worked flat from end-to-end.

A simple 4 row repeat with short row shaping produces a subtle crescent that hugs the neck and shoulders.

The stocking stitch edge folds inwards, lifting the piece around the nape of the neck adding elegance and structure.

The simple construction lends itself to experimentation, play with yarn, gauge and stitch counts to take this project further!

SALTGRASS | A Free Knitting Pattern

SALTGRASS

Named for the perennial salt-grass that grows along our local coastline, the Saltgrass beanie combines a delicate spikelet-like cable reminiscent of the salt-grass florets that appear every Spring. Its all-over rib pattern visually stabilises the design much like the physical effects of salt-grass traveling across the dunes. Knitted in the round from brim to crown in the softest baby alpaca from Amano Yarns, the Saltgrass beanie is an enjoyably quick knit to develop your cable skills and prepare for a coastal Spring.

Enjoy!
